• Andrew Gillespie - Drums, Yoga for Musicians

  • Brass Band Drumming Demo

  • Andrew Gillespie is an accomplished drummer and percussionist whose style is influenced by experiences in musical epicenters including Cuba, Brazil, New Orleans and New York City. Instead of remotely studying rhythms Andrew has lived and breathed the music, learning traditions, languages, dances, and cultures.

After a year in Brazil as a foreign exchange student in 1998, Andrew returned to the U.S. to pursue studies in music and language. He earned an individualized degree in music, Latin American studies, and Portuguese while studying at the University of Miami and the University of Minnesota. During this time Andrew also studied abroad at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, playing informally with other university students and enthusiastically exploring Puerto Rico's vibrant salsa music scene.

Andrew then traveled to Cuba three times beginning in 2006, soaking up the island's deep cultural and musical heritage. In 2015 he attended the International Danzon Festival in Havana with Minneapolis-based Charanga Tropical, the first American group ever to be invited. Andrew recently returned from a six-year stint in New York City to his home base of Minneapolis, where he received his 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification. Andrew continues to perform and teach drums and percussion, along with pursuing his interest in teaching yoga tailored to musicians.
